The 2010 La Jolla Program

The La Jolla Program

Seven days and seven nights, eleven waterfalls, a beautiful environment for a time of personal growth and discovery.

The next La Jolla Program will be August 14th to August 21st, 2010.  The tuition which includes all meals and room is $850.00 double, $990.00 single occupancy.  We will meet at Silver Falls, Oregon.  This is truly a beautiful part of the world.  Also, comfortable and excellent meals.

Briefly, the La Jolla Program is a residential program for individuals interested in learning more about themselves and others.  The program is appropriate for the experienced professional as well as the lay person

This will be our 42nd year offering the La Jolla Program.  We started in 1968 at the Western Behavioral Sciences Institute and continued most of our life through The Center for Studies of the Person.  We began with the active participation of Carl Rogers, one of America’s most influential psychologists.  The Program is still following in the client centered/person centered tradition associated with Dr. Rogers.

The La Jolla Program includes the development of listening skills, an aptitude for empathy, self-awareness, and the understanding of others while meeting new people, making new friends and having a good time.

Many attendees tell us, even years after the experience, that the program was one of the most constructive, life enhancing, experiences of their lives.

Facilitators and staff include:  Keddie Burrows, Bruce Meador, Ph.D., David Meador and Will Stillwell, Ph.D.

Think of the La Jolla Program as a journey of self discovery and professional advancement.

·  You will learn methods for being effective in your associations with other people both personally and professionally.

·  You will probably interact with people who bring different customs, thoughts, values and aspirations to the program.

·  You may become a more effective listener.

·  You may increase your acceptance of others and yourself.

·  You will learn more about yourself at levels that are invigorating and may be surprising.

IS THIS A SURPRISE?

This should be...Is This A Surprise?

From The Psychotherapy Networker:  “Twenty five years ago, in 1982, the first issue of the Psychotherapy Networker was published.  That same year, American Psychologist surveyed 800 members of the American Psychological Association to learn which theoretical clinical orientations they followed and which psychotherapists they believed to be the most influential in the field.

On the 25th anniversary of this magazine, it seemed appropriate to revisit these questions…we partnered with Dr. Joan Cook at Columbia University and her research project funded by the National Institute of Mental Health to find out ourselves, posing the question, "Over the last 25 years, which figures have most influenced your practice?”  Respondents could list up to 10 different sources of influence if they wished ......

Perhaps the most surprising single finding was that in both the 1982 and the 2006 survey the single most influential psychotherapist - by a landslide - was Carl Rogers.  In other words, the therapist who became famous for his leisurely, nondirective, open-ended, soft-focus form of therapy 50 years ago remains a major role model today ...... Even though Rogers was named the most influential therapist, the most popular therapeutic approach…what most people in our survey do at least part of the time in their practice…is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.”

The La Jolla Program attempts to keep closely in touch with the understandings of Carl Rogers, including his insistence on being open to new ideas and new ways to facilitate self-discovery.
